The Cardinals started the week after a double sweep of the Padres and Mets, three games ahead in the race for the second Wild Card. With eight road games Four in Milwaukee, and Four in Chicago. The prospects of continuing the success of the previous week were, at best, optimistic.
Game 1 September 20, @ Milwaukee, Cardinals 5 - Brewers 2
Jon Lester took the mound with 199 major league wins. Also, Nolan Arenado was sitting on 99 RBIs for the season.
For Lester, a pair of home runs, the only blemishes on an otherwise solid outing.
At one point, he would retire 10 in a row. His line for the day was 6IP, 3H, 2R, 0BB, 2SO. Three relievers would combine to help keep the Brewers in check and get Lester his 200th win.

While Nolan Arenado would get his 100th and 101st RBIs in the first inning, Yadier Molina would provide the offensive power to help Lester get to number 200.
Arenado would stake Lester to a 2-0 lead with a blast to Left Field.
Then in the second, Lester would make two mistakes; the first to Avisail Garcia for a home run off the batters eye and two batters later to Luis Urias for a home run over the bullpen Left-Center.
In the sixth, Molina would put the Cards back on top with a single to left field.
Paul Goldschmidt would drive home a run in the seventh with a Sac fly to Center Field, scoring 4-2.
In the eighth, Molina would put the exclamation point with an RBI single to the Left-Center field.
Lester 6-6 Garcia save 1. It was the Cardinals 9th win in a row, putting the Cardinals at 80-69.
Lester - Win # 200 comes EIGHT years to the EXACT day of win #100.
Arenado - First Cardinal player to have 30HRs and 100RBIs since Albert Pujols.
Game 2 September 21, @ Milwaukee, Cardinals 2- Brewers 1
Jake Woodford hoped to keep the St Louis win streak alive.

Then the bullpen took over.

Luis Garcia would give up the only Brewer tally

Giovanny Gallegos would have some trouble in the ninth 1IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 1SO.
The Cardinals only managed 5 hits, but they would not need many.
Tyler O'Neill would put the Cards on the board first with a sac fly
Tommy Edman would add to the Cards lead in the ninth with an RBI single, his second hit of the day. It would prove to be the winning run.
The Brewers would get a run in the eighth on a Willy Adames sac fly.
The Brewers would threaten 9th, But Pinch hitter Pablo Reyes struck out with two runners on. The win would be the birds 10th in a row. And make their overall record 81-69.
Edman - It was the fourth time in 10 games he would have a two-hit game.
Woodford - It would be his first win since being recalled and third win of the year.
Gallegos - earned his 11th save.
Game 3 September 22, @ Milwaukee Cardinals 10- Brewers 2
Miles Mikolas would have his best outing of the season.
Paul Goldschmidt would lead an offensive onslaught to keep the Cardinal streak alive.
Mikolas would pitch 7 solid innings. 4H, 2R, 0BB, 3SO.

The Redbirds banged out 15 hits—three each by Goldschmidt and Harrison Bader. Goldschmidt would score the first run and the last run.
In the first, after a Goldy single, Tyler O'Neill would homer(29th) to Left-Center to give the birds the 2-0 lead.
In the second, the Cardinals would tack on more runs.
A Tommy Edman sac fly plated two runs, and Edmundo Sosa scored from third. Bader came all the way around to score from second base.
Back-to-back doubles by Goldy, Bro'Neill, and Nolan Arenado would plate two more runs, making the score 6-0.
In the fourth, a sac fly by Arenado made it 7-0.
The Brewers would plate a run in the fifth on a single by Luis Urias, making it 7-1.
The Cards would make it 8-1 in the seventh on a Bader double.
Avisail Garcia would answer with a homer in the bottom of the seventh, making it 8-2.
Goldschmidt would hit a two-run bomb(27th) in the top of the eighth, closing out the scoring at 10-2.
The win was the 11th in a row. The last time that happened was in 2011. It also gave them an 82 - 69 record, ensuring no losing season.
Goldschmidt - His 12th three-hit game of the year.

Carlson- Hit his 30th double, giving then Cardinals 4 players with 30 Double or more; Edman 41, Goldschmidt 33, Arenado 33, and Carlson with 30.
Game 4 September 23, @ Milwaukee Cardinals 8- Brewers 5
The Cardinals would have to come behind in this one to get their 12th win in a row. Adam Wainwright would have an uncustomary rough outing. The bullpen would pick him up and allow the offense to do its thing.
The Brew Crew would rough up Wainwright causing him an early exit. 4IP, 4H, 5R, 2BB, 1SO. He would, however, record the 2000th strikeout of his career.
Kwang Hyun Kim 2IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB, 2SO
T J McFarland and Luis Garcia would pitch one inning, each giving up a hit and striking out one but allowing NO RUNS.
Giovanny Gallegos 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2SO
The offense waited around to get started scoring seven times in the last three innings.
For the second day in a row, Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, including TWO home runs and three RBIs. Yadier Molina added two RBIs as well to help pace the Cardinal comeback win.
With one on and two out, Wainwright allowed a Grand Slam home run by Tyrone Taylor. to spot the Brewers to a 4-0 lead. Taylor would homer again in the fourth a solo shot. Making it five - zip.
Meanwhile, Adrian Houser set down the first 13 batters he faced. In the fifth, however, Molina would single home a run making the score 5-1. The Cardinals would score again in the seventh.
Tommy Edman drove in the first run when he reached on a fielder's choice. Dylan Carlson would score on a passed ball. Then Goldy would unload for a two-run shot tying the game at five apiece. A passed ball allowed Nolan Arenado to score in the eighth, giving the Cardinals their first lead. Molina would then add to the lead with a sac fly to make the score 7-5. For the second game in a row, Goldy gets the final run for St Louis with a home run for the 8-5 final.
The 12 game streak puts the overall record at 83-69. Making it 14 straight winning seasons.

Kim - The second time, he pitched two or more innings in relief, allowing no runs.
Game 5 September 24, @ Chicago NL Cardinals 8- Cubs 5 (game one of Two)
The Cardinals sent J A Happ to the mound in game one of a doubleheader. The birds grabbed the early lead and held on.
Happ would go four innings of the scheduled seven-inning game, allowing no runs on =two hits. He would give up four walks while striking out six.
Alex Reyes 1 2/3IP 2H, 4R, 2BB, 3SO. he would still get his 10th win.

The Birds scored in the 3rd with a two-run shot by Goldschmidt for the early 2-0 lead
in the 5th Jose Rondon would pinch hit for Happ and deliver a two-run shot of his own. Three batters later, O'Neill would go deep for yet another two-run shot. Making the score 6-0. Edman and Goldschmidt would each singled home runs in the sixth to make it 8-0
The Cubs would mount a comeback in the sixth.
Sergio Alcantara would start the scoring with a two-run homer. Later, pinch hitter Austin Romine doubled home two more. Wilson Contreras would double home the final Cub run of the inning and the game, which put the Cards at 13 in a row. One shy of the modern-day team record 14 wins in a row by the 1935 Gashouse Gang. It brings the Cards overall record to 84-69.
Bader - His double in the fifth was his 300th hit.
Cardinals - with Goldschmidt and O'Neill each hitting their 30th home runs now gives the Cards three 30 + home run hitters for the first time since 2004 Albert Pujols(46), Jim Edmonds (42), and Scott Rolen(34).
Edmundo Sosa was hit on the hand by a pitch in the sixth his status is the day today.
Game 6 September 24, @ Chicago (NL) Cardinals 12 - Cubs 4 (game two of two)
In-game 2 of the Doubleheader, the Cardinals picked up where they left off. They scored runs in five of the seven innings to cruise to the easy victory and a Double Header sweep. Paul Goldschmidt, Harrison Bader, and Lars Nootbaar each had three hits in the game. Nootbaar and Tyler O'Neill would each drive in three runs. The game marked the return of Jack Flaherty as the "opener". He was backed up by the first appearance of the year for Dakota Hudson.

24 year Old Lars Nootbaar would have his first multi-home run and first 3 RBI game. Tyler O'Neil would also drive in three runs with his 31st homer of the season.
The Redbirds in the first and never looked back. In the first, Yadier Molina doubled with the bases loaded, driving in two, and Harrison Bader would single to drive in the third. The Cubs would answer When former Cardinal Patrick Wisdom homered with a man on.
In the second, with runners at first and third, O'Neill would hit his second homer of the day. Putting the Birds up 6-2.
Back-to-back homers highlighted the third inning for the cards by Nootbaar and Paul DeJong, making it 8-2.
The Cubs answered back with an RBI ground out by Ian Happ, making the score 8-3.
Nootbaar would strike again for St Louis in the fifth with an RBI single, putting the Cards up six 9-3. I. Happ would drive in another run for Chicago with a sac fly to cut the lead to four 9-4.
In the seventh, the cards would go back to back home runs again, this time with Bader and Nootbaar. Later on, Paul Goldschmidt would top off the scoring with an RBI double.
The Doubleheader sweep equaled the mark of 14 wins in a row set on July 4th, 1935, in Wrigley Field by the Gashouse Gang.
It also gave St Louis a commanding five-game lead over Philadelphia in the Wild Card race. And giving the birds on the bat an 85-69 record.
O'Neill - now has 10 home runs for September.
Goldschmidt - Has now homered eight times in September to give him six seasons of 30 or more home runs.
Game 7 September 25, @ Chicago NL Cardinals 8 - Cubs 5
The Cards came back late in this one getting 3 runs in the ninth then holding off a rally by the Cubs. The 15th win in a row had a special flair I
Shaky starting pitching, but good bullpen work was the order of the day.
Jon Lester had a struggle, 5IP, 8H, 4R, 3ER,3BB, 6SO.
Kwang Hyun Kim would come in and steady the ship 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0SO.
Kim would get the win (7-7)
TJ McFarland made sure the door would stay shut. 2IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 1SO
Luis Garcia Would finish the Cubs off. 1IP, 1H, 1R, 0BB, 1SO
Harrison Bader went 4-4 with a home run, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Paul DeJong would homer for the second time in two games. Oh, and Tyler O'Neill would homer for the 3rd game in a row, 4 homers in his last 5 games.
The Cards would open the scoring on a Bader solo homer in the second to make it 1-0. The Cubs would answer back in the third. A pair of singles and a fielding error led to the bases being loaded. Wilson Contreras hit an RBI double. Two batters later, Ian Happ would single making it 2-1.
In the fourth, O'Neill's solo shot tied the game.
The Cubs would load the bases in the third with the help of a Nolan Arenado throwing error. Contreras would single home a run, and I. Happ would walk with the bases loaded for another run making it 4-2.
Bader would single in a run in the seventh, followed by Lars Nootbaar, who would drive in a run with a single. DeJong would drive in a third run with a sac fly, giving the birds the lead at 5-4.
In the eighth inning, the Cardinals pulled off a 3-2-5-4-2-8-6 double play.
Bader would score on a wild pitch in the ninth, and DeJong would add a two-run homer for the coup de grace. I. Happ would hit a solo shot in the ninth for the baby bears to make the final 8-5.
With the win streak at 15, the birds look to add on.
At an overall record of 86-69, the wild card seems well in hand.
For his career in 43 games at Wrigley Field, DeJong has 13 home runs and 32 RBIs.
Bader - has 13 hits in his last 19 AB for a .684 BA.
Game 8 September 26, @ Chicago NL Cardinals 4 - Cubs 2
Riding high on the 15 game win streak, The Cardinals looked to close out a series against the Cubs and register their fourth consecutive sweep. The Cardinals turned to 24-year-old Jake Woodford to keep things rolling.
Woodford 5.1IP, 6H, 2R, 2BB, 1SO. The bullpen would be the difference.

Goldy would get things started with a home run in the third inning. spotting the visiting birds up 1-0
In the fourth, Sergio Alcantara would drive home a run with a double. David Bote would drive home another with a sac fly.
Bader would homer onto Waveland Avenue to tie the game at two-all.
In the ninth, the Cubs would gift the Cards a run a Codi Heuer wild pitch would score Andrew Knizner from third. O'Neill would provide an insurance run on a ground out to the pitcher.
The 16th win in a row matched the 1909 Pittsburgh Pirates for the longest winning streak in September/October. It is the longest winning streak in MLB since the 1951 New York Giants, who also won 16 in a row. It makes the Cards record 87-69. With six games to go, it also pretty much assured the Redbirds the second Wild Card.
The final six games will be a repeat of the last two series except at Busch Stadium.
